A
well-known physician in Meridian, Mississippi, wrote the following about “Living
Above Pain."
“.
. . Physicians are taught how to treat many types of medical pain, but pain
can be emotional, mental or spiritual as well. In Alma Edith Welch's book,
Living Above Pain, she relates how different individuals were able
to cope with the pain that life had given them. . . these inspirational, courageous
stories collected by Alma Welch show us how other people were able to soar above
their pain. It gives each of us hope that in
our suffering, relief is possible . . ."

REAL
PEACE: What is real peace? Some of us have
a tendency to blame God when things go wrong. Since 9/11, there is more unemployment,
grief, discontentment, and uncertainty, and this has caused life to be desolate
for many. However, the following statement may be helpful for the hurting:
|
|
|
|
“Living Above Pain" is the best titled book that I have ever seen.
Alma Edith Welch has drawn from deep within personal experience and sufferings
to put together the richest materials that will bless and encourage the reader
to see new heights of real peace and contentment, even in the midst of pain.
"Alma
Edith Welch is a devoted Christian that walks with God each day. She has been
an inspiration to her pastor and to our church family because of her faithfulness
to serve the Lord, and her untiring efforts to help others who are hurting.
Illness has touched every person since the Garden of Eden. No one is exempt.
I recommend this book for the information that will give you insight in your
particular need."

NEW
STRENGTH DAILY: What a blessing to know that someone is praying for
you to have new strength daily! In the Old Testament, before Moses' death, he
prayed a special blessing for each leader of Israel's twelve tribes. In Deuteronomy
33:25, he said to the leader Asher, “As your days, so shall your strength
be . . .” As professing Christians, we accept the fact that daily
“The Lord is the strength of my life . . .” (Psalm 27:1b)
Therefore,
we have joy in the midst of suffering, knowing we have new strength daily.

Living
Above Pain has a story about Alma as a college student; her physician
told her that she would not be physically able to finish her last college
semester. He also said that she would never be able to work. At that college,
a chapel message was required for graduation. The story continues:
|
|

“My
college days were one challenge after another. I am thankful that I can't
remember all the hardships of those days, but I do remember the day that I
was assigned to give my chapel message (without the physician's awareness)...I
stood before the students and faculty and my words flowed freely. It seemed
a new strength filled my body and voice. . . I emphasized. . . (Isaiah 40:31) —
“But
they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount
up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk
and not faint.” . . . My strength had been renewed to do what was thought
medically impossible. I had walked without fainting. . ."
(Chapter Eleven)

“Alma
not only accepted God's promise of Isaiah 40:31 but she has lived it for the
last 50-plus years since her college graduation ceremony. The eagle
plaque in her bedroom is a constant reminder that she can soar freely and serenely
above the clouds in her life. When it came time to give her chapel message,
she felt the power of God's strength; she not only gave her chapel message,
but she walked down the aisle with the other students to receive her diploma.
The physician had insisted that she should return home and get her diploma by
mail. He told her: ‘If you stay here, I will accept no responsibility.’”
Alma
accepted the responsibility and finished her college semester with that new
strength daily. Her true faith in God was her stronghold. She believes that
God heals His way, which was surgery in some cases, including a cerebral aneurysm.
Regardless of the storms, she just "mounts up with wings like eagles'"
and keeps going. She is in His Hands!
THE EAGLE'S
PROMINENCE IN LIVING ABOVE PAIN: "A beautiful, majestic bird has
been used in the word of God to illustrate the power of God available to me
when I simply wait on Him. He lifts me up as if I am 'on eagle's wings,' as
He said to Moses to remind the Israelites in Exodus 19:4. . ." (Page 180)
|
|
|
God
said in Exodus 19:4: "Give these instructions to the people of Israel.
Tell them, 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I brought you
to myself as though on eagle's wings . . .’"
LIFE
OF AN EAGLE: A study of the life of eagles teaches that the eagle knows
when a storm is coming and goes to a higher area to wait for the winds to actually
lift it up above the storm. The eagle does not escape the storms, it simply
uses them to take it higher. God enables us to do the same! It is not the burdens
of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them. The eagle never gets weighed
down.

PRAYER
MIRACLES: We are unaware that miracles happen every day. We often say,
“It just so happened . . .” Alma believes that every human being
is a walking miracle, because birth is a miracle! We escape accidents or events
that could paralyze or kill us, but we shrug it off or even laugh about it.
However, it was probably a miracle.
A
friend wrote: “Medicine takes time to take effect on this disease (Myositis).
. . I called my pastor who is a strong believer in the power of prayer. He prayed
and also asked our Sunday School class and the church to pray for me. As soon
as they started praying for me, I began to be able to sleep in my bed . . .”
(Chapter
Nine)
Alma
is a strong believer in prayer and knows that prayer helped her during the ten
years in writing this book. When we pray, miracles happen or we have prayer
miracles! Her faith in God was her stronghold. She believes that God heals his
way which was surgery several times . . .
